Shoppers and grocers go green with eco-friendly bags

Plastic, we shun you. Paper, stay folded. We’ve brought our own bags, thank you very much. Spacious, sturdy, non-ripping no-polluting reusable bags. Bags that don’t clog up the cabinets and landfills or feed our equally-accumulating guilt. These bas, see, maek us feel good. “Every time I walk out when I do have them, it really makes me feel like I’m doing my part to make our world a greener, healthier world” says 30 year old Heather Dennis of Nashville “So that the incentive to do it; it just makes me feel good to have one less Plastic bag” We want them bags. Want them with a passion. And you know where we’re getting them? From grocers.

Harold Thinks! Whether you agree with the theory on global warming or not, I think we can all agree that we should work to make the world a better place to live. This is one small way to do just that. I see that the local Costco store is selling large shopping bags right at checkout stands. My family recycles everything we can because it is easy to do. I know that we will be forced away from plastic bags in the future because politicians will see a way to tax them and have already tried in many places. The problem I am going to have in giving up plastic bags is I save them and use them for a variety of things around the house.
What is your solution for the plastic bag problem or do you even see it as a problem?
U.S. to get tougher on employers of illegal immigrants
By Julia Preston

In a new effort to crack down on illegal immigrants, federal authorities in the United States are expected to announce rules this week that would require employers to fire workers who use false Social Security numbers. Officials said the rules would be backed up by increased raids on workplaces across the country that employ illegal immigrants. After first proposing the rules last year, Homeland Security officials said they held off finishing them to await the outcome of the debate in Congress over a sweeping immigration bill. The measure, which was supported by President George W. Bush, died in the Senate in June. Now administration officials are signaling that they intend to clamp down on employers of illegal immigrants even without a new immigration law to offer legal status to millions of illegal immigrants already in the work force.

Harold Thinks! I read an editorial about immigration that made sense to me. The writer said that our country was founded on the rule of law and we had lost our way. I couldn’t agree more since we haven’t been enforcing immigration law since the last one was passed and even before that. The workforce shortage in Agriculture can be solved with a properly administered Guest Worker Program. We don’t need a new immigration bill. We can make the last one work with proper enforcement and fixing the problems with the paperwork. Seems too simple to be true. So what do you think?
