I just got back from the PMA. As usual, it was a lot of hard work but a very rewarding time. I met people who I have talked with for years but never met in person, renewed old acquaintances and had the pleasure of meeting some new people. The problem with this is that I struggle with remembering names. It is a problem I have always had so I can’t blame it on age. Thank goodness I am good at reading nametags and remember faces. Tesco Confirms Fresh & Easy Opening Date

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- British retailer Tesco has confirmed previous reports that it will be opening its first Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores on Nov. 8. Six California stores -- in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties -- will open on that date, the company announced yesterday in a news release. After years of researching American consumers and developing the Fresh & Easy format, the company said it views these grand openings as a milestone."After great anticipation, we are thrilled to open our doors to neighborhoods in Southern California and offer them fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices," Tim Mason, Fresh & Easy CEO, said in a statement. "We are also excited to demonstrate our strong commitment to being a good neighbor and a great place to work."

Harold Thinks! You are not paying much attention to what is happening in our industry if you not following the store of the British food giant entering the U.S. market. Many suave retailers have been implementing plans to stem the impact of this invasion. Whether it will be successful are not remains to be seen but with the money they have invested my bet is they will certainly have a chance of picking up a piece of our food dollars. Suppliers will be looking at another outlet for their produce and many retailers have already launched upgrades and new store designs to compete with this new British invasion. The question is will Tesco be highly successful in the U.S. Go to www.agplus.net to the opinion poll at the bottom right of the page and vote. Let me know what you think.

Political television advertising to reach $3 billion

By Mark Preston
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A wide-open presidential race and a willingness by candidates, interest groups, unions and corporations to buy TV time will lead to historic spending for political and issue-advocacy advertising in the 2008 election cycle, an analysis shows. The cost to try to influence the 2008 election could exceed $3 billion, according to TNS Media Intelligence/Campaign Media Analysis Group, CNN's consultant on political television advertising.
This is nearly twice as much than what was spent in 2004 when political and issue-advocacy television advertising rang in at $1.7 billion. In 2006, $2.3 billion was spent on political and issue-advocacy TV commercials.
Just about every candidate running for an office from dogcatcher to president is spending the money, said Evan Tracey, CMAG's chief operating officer. The costs to produce a TV commercial are no longer prohibitive for local and state candidates, who are turning more and more to the airwaves to reach voters

Harold Thinks! I recommend that you don’t read this article on a full stomach because reading it could cause you to become ill.  It is bad enough that the campaign for president in the 2008 election started in 2005 but to be raising and spending this kind of money is just crazy. I may be too skeptical but it seems to me with all that money being thrown around some of the donors might accept favors from those who are elected. Maybe we should just put all the candidates up for sale on E-bay. Everyone who bid would have to send their money in and the highest bidder could expect bigger favors from those elected. My guess there would be enough to fund National Health Care. The bidding could last for 90 days before the election.  That would save all of us from the barrage of twisted truth ads to come.

Salinas, California

John is the winner of week 6 and won the prize in a closely contested contest by picking the point total of 28. Reviewing the total points only 3 people in the top 40 picked under 32 points. John was indeed lucky that the person he beat was one of those three people. For his effort he won the Visa Gift card valued at $300

This was another exciting week in the NFL. Most players had picked the Giants to win so it came down to total points. The two most disappointing teams for pickers had to be Seattle and Chicago. Trigger869 was the third place finisher and one of only three players that picked both Chicago and Seattle to lose. Their poor choice of going against Bret Favre cost the win.
