Newsletter

I received a few responses to my Newsletter last week on gas prices and a boycott. The poll on www.agplus.net showed over 86% of you would support a boycott. The question still remains unanswered about enough people working together to make it happen. I am looking for a few more positive responses. Just send me an e-mail. If you haven’t voted on the poll make sure to cast your vote.
Canada thinks U.S. attacks on NAFTA somewhat irrational
By David Ljunggren
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Increasing U.S. criticism of NAFTA is somewhat irrational, since the free trade deal is not responsible for job losses that so worry American policy makers, a Canadian government minister said on Wednesday.
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the two Democratic presidential contenders, vow to change or even abandon the trade agreement linking the United States, Canada and Mexico. This would badly hurt Canada, which sends 75 percent of all its exports to the United States.Canadian Trade Minister David Emerson said U.S. critics of NAFTA should focus their ire elsewhere."I strongly believe that the growth in protectionist sentiment is somewhat misplaced and irrational. It's people who are concerned about the loss of jobs over the last 10 years which largely -- analytically -- has been shown to be driven by technology," he told reporters.

Harold Thinks! Canada has a good reason to be pro-NAFTA but this article certainly makes some interesting points about where our job losses are really going. I found it interesting that even a political candidate for the Presidency is saying one thing about NAFTA for American Voters while telling the Canadians not to worry. Is it any wonder I am skeptical of what politicians say during an election year or for that matter at any time? What do you think?
Tesco takes time off from openings
Fresh & Easy has 59 markets

British retailer Tesco did its homework before expanding into the U.S. market under its Fresh & Easy brand, conducting extensive market research on Americans' shopping, cooking and eating habits.Even so, Tesco is not immune to a few speed bumps. The company said Tuesday that it is taking a three-month break until early July from opening any new Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets. The company has opened 59 stores in the western United States since November, including one at Alamo and Tapo streets in Simi Valley, but several more are planned for Ventura County. The decision had nothing to do with the state of the economy, said Brendan Wonnacott, a Fresh & Easy spokesman. In fact, it's something that Tesco has done before in other markets, and is nothing to be alarmed about, he said.

Harold Thinks! This is a great article and gives you a good idea of the current status of Tesco’s Fresh and Easy stores as well as an overview of what Tesco competition has been doing to blunt their attack on their markets. I believe they have made a very smart business move in pulling back and reviewing their performance. If you are a competitor and think this is a sign of surrender I believe you will be sadly mistaken. Tesco is here for the long haul and you should be preparing to compete with them.
